September is Baby Safety Month.
A time dedicated to raising awareness about protecting our little ones as they grow, play, and explore. At Wellies Day Nursery, safety is not just a focus for one month; it’s woven into our daily routines, our environment, and our staff culture all year round.
We know that parents entrust us with their most precious treasures, and that trust is built on knowing we keep children safe in every way possible, physically, emotionally, and developmentally.
Here’s how we make safety a top priority at Wellies.
1. Highly Trained Staff in Paediatric First Aid
All our nursery team members — from baby room practitioners to management — hold paediatric first aid certificates. This training covers vital skills such as infant and child CPR, choking response for all ages (including under 1s), treating bumps, bruises, and minor injuries, managing allergic reactions, and handling more serious emergencies until professional help arrives.
We also refresh our training regularly so that every staff member stays confident and up to date with the latest best practices. Parents can feel reassured knowing that if the unexpected happens, we’re fully prepared to act quickly and calmly.
2. Baby-Proofed Spaces for Every Stage of Development
Our rooms are designed to be age-appropriate and hazard-free while still offering children freedom to explore. We place corner and edge protectors on low furniture to prevent injury. Cupboards and storage units have secure locks to keep cleaning products, art supplies, and any small objects out of reach. We use shatterproof, child-friendly materials for mirrors, furniture, and toys.
We also regularly review our baby-proofing as children grow, because what is safe for a newborn might present a risk for a crawling baby or confident walker.
3. Daily and Weekly Safety Checks
We carry out daily risk assessments of every room, garden area, and shared space, looking for anything that could cause harm, such as loose fittings, worn play equipment, or slippery floors. On a weekly basis, we deep clean toys and play equipment, inspect outdoor play structures for stability and wear, and test safety alarms and fire equipment.
By taking this proactive approach, we can prevent issues before they happen rather than waiting for problems to arise.
4. Secure Entry and Collection Procedures
Child security begins at the door. Our secure entry system ensures that only authorised staff, parents, and carers can enter the nursery. At pick-up time, children are released only to pre-approved adults listed on their records. If a different person is collecting a child, we require advance notice from the parent and photographic identification from the adult collecting. Our staff are trained to politely but firmly follow these procedures every single time.
This gives parents complete peace of mind that their child’s safety is never compromised.
5. Outdoor Safety
Outdoor play is an important part of a child’s development, and we believe they should enjoy it in a safe and controlled environment. Our gardens and outdoor learning areas are surrounded by fully enclosed fencing and secure gates. All climbing equipment is age-appropriate and positioned over soft landing surfaces to reduce injury risk. We maintain constant staff supervision outdoors and ensure staff-to-child ratios are always met.
We also provide shaded areas for hot days and follow clear clothing policies for colder weather to make sure children are both safe and comfortable. As part of our outdoor play, we teach children safe habits, such as taking turns on the slide, walking when carrying toys, and being aware of others around them.
6. Safe Weaning Practices
For babies beginning their weaning journey, safety is a top priority in both preparation and feeding. At Wellies, we follow NHS and World Health Organization guidelines for introducing solid foods around six months, unless otherwise advised by a healthcare professional. We cut foods into age-appropriate shapes and sizes to reduce choking risks and ensure staff are trained to recognise and respond to signs of choking.
We introduce potential allergens carefully, one at a time, while keeping parents fully informed at each step. Mealtimes for younger babies are supervised on a one-to-one basis to ensure they are eating safely. We also keep the eating environment calm and focused, which helps babies chew and swallow without distraction.
7. Ongoing Safety Education for Children
Even at a young age, children can begin to learn about their own safety. Through everyday routines and play, our team models gentle and respectful behaviour and teaches safe climbing and balancing skills. We show children how to handle toys and materials carefully, encourage frequent handwashing and good hygiene routines, and use age-appropriate language to help them understand rules and boundaries.
By starting these lessons early, children begin to develop their own awareness and responsibility, building lifelong habits that will help keep them safe.
At Wellies Day Nursery, safety is more than a policy , it’s part of our identity. Every member of our team, every corner of our nursery, and every daily routine is designed to protect, nurture, and give children the confidence to explore in a safe, secure space.
