It might feel like September is ages away, but if your little one is off to big school after the summer, now’s the perfect time to start easing them (and you!) into the idea.

Starting school is a huge milestone - it’s exciting, emotional and sometimes a little nerve-wracking, too. But with a few simple steps, you can help your child feel more confident and ready to take it all in their stride.

Here are some gentle ways to get started:

Start the School Chat Early:

Talking about school in a positive, relaxed way can help your child get used to the idea. Chat about what their day might look like, what kind of things they’ll be doing and how exciting it will be to make new friends and learn new things. If you know which school they’re going to, mention the name regularly so it becomes familiar.

Practice the Little Big Things:

It’s the little things that can feel like big challenges at first - putting on a coat, opening a lunchbox, or going to the toilet independently. Over the next few months, gently encourage your child to start doing more of these things on their own. (Top tip: make it into a game and they won’t even notice they’re learning!)

Read Books About Starting School:

There are so many lovely books out there about starting school that can help children understand what to expect and process any worries. A few favourites include:

• Starting School by Janet and Allan Ahlberg

• Harry and the Dinosaurs Go to School by Ian Whybrow

• Come to School Too, Blue Kangaroo! by Emma Chichester Clark

Snuggling up with a story is always a win in our book.

Visit the School:

If your child’s school offers an open day or settling session before September, take full advantage. Seeing the classroom, meeting the teachers and even spotting where the toilets are can make a huge difference come the first day.

Keep Routines Nice and Steady:

As we get closer to the start of term, try to gradually shift bedtime and morning routines to match the school schedule. A calm, predictable routine helps children feel secure - and a good night’s sleep helps with everything.

And finally... don’t forget to celebrate this next chapter!

Starting school is a big step for the whole family. It’s okay to feel a mix of emotions (we do too!), and remember - your child has already learned so much during their time at Wellies. They’re more ready than you might think.
