Outdoor Play & Exploration at Wellies
At Wellies Day Nursery, we are proud of our outdoor spaces, designed to inspire imagination, creativity, and active play.
Our outdoor facilities provide children with opportunities to:
Explore nature up close – from digging in soil to discovering plants and mini-beasts
Engage in sensory play – using mud kitchens, water play, and natural materials
Develop physical skills – climbing, balancing, running, and building confidence
Enjoy imaginative play – turning outdoor spaces into magical worlds and adventures

Outdoor play is a vital part of preschool development, and Spring gives us the perfect backdrop to make the most of it. Fresh air, open space, and natural resources all support children’s wellbeing and learning.

Learning Through Nature
Spring offers a rich, ever-changing environment that naturally supports children’s development across all areas of learning. At Wellies, we use the outdoors as an extension of the classroom, where children can learn through real experiences rather than just observation.
By engaging directly with nature, children begin to:
Develop curiosity and questioning skills – asking why flowers grow, how insects move, or what plants need to survive
Build early science understanding – exploring life cycles, weather changes, and cause and effect through play
Strengthen communication and language – describing what they see, sharing ideas, and learning new vocabulary linked to nature
Enhance emotional wellbeing – feeling calm, relaxed, and connected while spending time outdoors

Our activities are carefully planned but remain child-led, allowing children to follow their interests. One day this might mean digging and planting seeds, learning patience as they wait for growth. Another day, it could be lying on the grass watching clouds, or hunting for worms and mini-beasts in the soil. We also encourage responsibility by teaching children how to care for their environment by watering plants, respecting living creatures, and understanding the importance of looking after the world around them.

These meaningful, hands-on experiences help children develop confidence, independence, and a genuine love for learning.
Why Spring is So Special
Spring brings a unique energy to the nursery that can be felt in every corner of our outdoor space. After the colder winter months, children are naturally drawn outside, eager to move, explore, and rediscover their surroundings.
What makes spring particularly special is the constant sense of change and surprise. There is always something new to notice, a flower that wasn’t there yesterday, a sudden burst of sunshine, or the sound of birds. These small but powerful moments create excitement and wonder for young children.

Spring also supports:
Increased physical activity – with more opportunities to run, climb, and play freely outdoors
Improved mood and wellbeing – sunlight and fresh air help children feel happier and more energised
Stronger social connections – outdoor play encourages teamwork, sharing, and cooperative games
A sense of freedom and exploration – open spaces allow children to take safe risks and build confidence

There is something incredibly joyful about children splashing in puddles, feeling the breeze, or proudly showing the first green shoot they’ve helped grow. These experiences create lasting memories and a deep connection to the natural world. Spring reminds us to slow down, notice the little things, and celebrate growth. Not just in nature, but in the children themselves.
