Twice a year, the clocks change, while adults may feel a little groggy, for young children it can feel like their whole world has shifted!
As we move into British Summer Time (BST) in March, the clocks go forward by one hour. That means lighter evenings, brighter mornings, and sometimes a slightly tricky adjustment period for little ones.
At Wellies Day Nursery, we know how important routine and sleep are for children’s wellbeing. Here’s our practical guide to help your family transition smoothly.
What Happens When the Clocks Go Forward?
In March, the UK switches from Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) to British Summer Time (BST). At 1:00am, the clocks jump forward to 2:00am.
For children, this can mean:
Feeling more tired at bedtime
Waking earlier (even if the clock says otherwise!)
Changes in appetite or mood
A few unsettled days
The good news? Most children adjust within a week with a little gentle support.
5 Simple Tips to Help Your Child Adjust
Shift Bedtime Gradually
Start 3–4 days before the clock change by moving bedtime earlier in 10–15 minute increments. This gentle transition helps their body clock adjust without a sudden shock.
Let the Light In (At the Right Time!)
Morning light helps reset the body clock. Open curtains as soon as your child wakes up to signal it’s time to start the day.
In the evening, dim lights and reduce stimulation to encourage melatonin production.
Keep the Routine Consistent
Children thrive on predictability. Try to:
Keep mealtimes consistent
Follow the same bedtime routine (bath, story, cuddle)
Maintain nap times where possible
Consistency provides reassurance during small changes.
Watch for Overtiredness
It can be tempting to keep children up later because it’s lighter outside, but overtiredness can actually make bedtime harder. Stick closely to their sleep cues.
Be Patient (With Them and Yourself!)
Some children adjust in a day or two, others take longer. A little flexibility and extra cuddles go a long way.
