At Wellies Day Nursery, the safety and wellbeing of every child is at the centre of our care. Children’s Safety Week offers an important moment to reflect on how we protect children in our everyday routines, and one area that deserves particular attention is safer sleep.
Sleep plays a vital role in a child’s growth and development. It supports brain development, emotional regulation, and physical health. However, for babies and young children, sleep must always be approached with careful thought and consistent practice. National guidance highlights that safe sleep routines can significantly reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, making it essential that early years settings follow clear and up to date advice.
In our nursery, safer sleep is not treated as a checklist but as a continuous, attentive process. Each baby is placed on their back to sleep, which is widely recognised as the safest position. We ensure that every child has their own dedicated sleep space, with a firm and flat mattress that supports healthy rest. Our sleep environments are kept calm, clear, and uncluttered. This means no loose bedding, toys, or pillows that could pose a risk while a child is sleeping.
Our team maintains close supervision at all times. Sleeping children remain within sight and hearing of staff, and regular checks are carried out to ensure they are resting comfortably and safely. We are also mindful of the room temperature, keeping it within a safe range to prevent overheating, which is another important factor in safer sleep guidance.
What makes our approach truly effective is the partnership we build with parents and carers. Every child is unique, and their sleep routines often reflect what they are used to at home. We take the time to understand these routines and work with families to ensure they are followed safely within nursery guidance. By sharing advice and maintaining open communication, we help create consistency between home and nursery, which is reassuring for both children and their families.
Children’s Safety Week reminds us that safeguarding is not just about responding to risks, but about creating environments where risks are carefully managed before they arise. Safer sleep is a key part of this. The small, thoughtful actions we take every day, from how we position a baby to how we prepare a sleep space, all contribute to a safer start in life.
We encourage families to learn more about safer sleep guidance and how it can be applied at home by visiting:
