Potty training can be a stressful time for the child as well as their caregivers. It can be difficult to tell exactly when your little one is ready for potty training but whenever they do start, it’s useful to know how best to approach it and what to avoid.

To make things a little bit easier when encouraging your little one to use the potty, we’re giving you some dos and don’ts that are sure to help everyone!

DO keep a spare change of clothes with you when you’re out and about – accidents happen!

DON’T make your child feel embarrassed after an accident. It will happen from time to time but just remind them where they should be going to the toilet now instead of their trousers.

DO schedule potty breaks. Of course, still let them go whenever they feel they need to but setting a routine will help reinforce the proper way to go to the toilet and reduce the chance of an accident.

DON’T compare your child’s training to another’s. Each child is different and will develop at their own pace. It is nothing to worry about if they seem to be behind their friends.

DO use mattress protectors to prevent night-time accidents causing an expensive problem. You can find them for as little as £4 and will help keep their mattress clean.

DON’T start training if your child is unwell. This can develop an unhealthy relationship with going to the toilet as it’s associated with being ill.

DO teach them to wash their hands after using the potty. This will develop a good handwashing habit as they grow older and transition to the toilet.

DON’T be afraid to keep asking your little one if they need to use the potty. This will let them know that it’s always okay to go and helps them communicate when they do need to go.

DO encourage them to eat fibre-rich foods as this will make things easier when they do need to go. Apple juice, grapes and raisins are great sources of that all-important fibre!

What are your experiences with potty training? Do you have any dos and don’ts you can add to this list?
