At Wellies Day Nursery, we believe that creativity is so much more than just making something pretty — it’s a vital part of early childhood development that opens the door to imagination, confidence, and lifelong learning.
Crafting is one of the many joyful and enriching activities we offer, and it’s always a firm favourite with our little ones. But here’s the thing: creative play doesn’t need a perfect template or neat results. In fact, the best kind of crafting is often the messiest!
Why Is Creative Play So Important?

For pre-schoolers, creative play helps to:
✔ Build fine motor skills – cutting, gluing, painting and threading all strengthen little hands and fingers.
✔ Develop problem-solving – “How do I stick this?” “What colour should I use?” These small decisions lay the foundation for critical thinking.
✔ Boost confidence – when a child creates something that’s truly their own, it gives them a real sense of achievement.
✔ Express emotions – art allows children to communicate feelings they might not have the words for yet.
✔ Encourage imagination – when there's no “right” way to do something, creativity can truly shine!
No Templates Needed

At Wellies, we don’t focus on perfect outcomes — we focus on the process. That means our art and craft sessions are open-ended, child-led, and filled with opportunities for exploration.
Rather than handing out identical outlines to colour in, we offer a variety of materials — paints, paper, natural items, recycled bits, and more — and let our children create whatever their imaginations dream up.
A blob of glue here, a splash of paint there, and suddenly — it’s a monster, a castle, or a brand-new creature with four eyes and feathers!

Messy = Meaningful

Messy play is creative play. It’s how children learn cause and effect, texture, and experimentation. It’s okay if the paint ends up on hands, sleeves, or even the floor — because every mark made is a step in learning and self-expression.
So, when your child comes home with glitter in their hair and paint on their hands, know that they’ve had a brilliantly creative day!

Encouraging Creativity at Home

You don’t need expensive supplies or fancy kits to encourage crafting at home. Some scrap paper, cardboard boxes, nature finds, and crayons can go a long way. Let your child lead, ask questions about what they’re making, and most of all — resist the urge to “fix” or tidy their creations. Their art is theirs, just as it should be.

At Wellies Day Nursery, we’re proud to give our children the freedom to explore, invent, and get messy — because we know that’s how they grow best.
Let creativity be wild, let it be messy, and let it be theirs.
