Posted on 2nd March 2025 at 18:40
It's World Oral Health Day on 20th March - the perfect time therefore to focus on good dental hygiene for our little ones! As parents, encouraging healthy dental habits in your children helps establish a lifetime of good oral health. Here’s some tips from Wellies Nursery on how you can help your child maintain a bright and healthy smile.
Why Dental Health Matters
Good dental health is essential for your child's overall well-being. Proper oral hygiene helps prevent tooth decay, gum disease and other issues that can affect eating, speaking and most importantly self-esteem! Therefore it is crucial to start healthy habits early.
Getting Babies Comfortable with Toothbrushing
Introducing your child to tooth brushing should be a positive experience. Here are some tips to help your little one get used to the process:

* Start early: Even before your child has teeth, you can clean their gums with a soft, damp cloth after feedings or a specially designed finger brush. This helps them get used to the sensation of having their mouth cleaned.
* Make it Fun: Turn brushing into a fun activity! Sing songs or play games while brushing. The Hey Duggee toothbrushing song always goes down well.
* Lead by example: Children learn by watching. Brush your teeth alongside your child to model good habits. Show them how you brush.
* Create a routine: Establish a consistent routine - brushing in the morning and before bed. Consistency helps children feel comfortable and secure.
* Encourage independence: As your child gets older, allow them to hold the toothbrush and try brushing on their own.
Early Years Tips for Healthy Teeth & Gums
Once your child is a bit older, there are more things to watch out for when it comes to their oral health.

* Regular trips to the dentist: Nursery age children and older will need a check-up every six months. Early visits help children get comfortable with the dentist and identify any potential problems.
* Healthy diet: Encourage a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Limit sugary snacks and drinks that can lead to problems - best to avoid altogether if possible.

* Use positive reinforcement: Celebrate moments such as them brushing without fuss or visiting the dentist. Stickers are always great at motivating children - a secret weapon!
