At Wellies Day Nursery, we believe some of the most valuable learning experiences happen outdoors, where children can explore, discover and connect with the natural world around them. This July, our focus is on being Wild About Wildlife, encouraging children to develop a love and appreciation for nature through hands-on experiences, observation and play.
From tiny bees buzzing between flowers to colourful butterflies fluttering through the garden, wildlife is all around us. By helping children notice and understand the creatures that share our environment, we are nurturing curiosity, respect and a sense of responsibility for the world they live in.
Why Wildlife Matters to Children
Children are naturally fascinated by animals and insects. Whether they are watching a ladybird crawl across a leaf, spotting birds in the trees or searching for minibeasts under logs, these experiences spark questions, conversations and a desire to learn more.
Spending time in nature also supports children's development in many ways. Outdoor exploration encourages physical activity, problem-solving, communication skills and emotional wellbeing. Discovering Wildlife in the Wellies Garden
Our outdoor spaces provide the perfect environment for wildlife exploration. Throughout July, children will be observing the plants, insects and animals that visit our garden.
One particular area of excitement is our growing sunflowers. As the children watch them stretch higher towards the summer sunshine, they are learning about plant growth, lifecycles and the important role pollinators play in helping flowers thrive.
The garden has become a busy hub for bees, butterflies and other insects. Through careful observation, children are beginning to understand how these creatures contribute to healthy ecosystems and why protecting their habitats is so important.
Simple activities such as bug hunts, nature walks and wildlife spotting encourage children to slow down, look closely and appreciate the fascinating details that often go unnoticed.
Learning About Some of Nature's Most Amazing Creatures
July provides several opportunities to celebrate wildlife awareness days, helping children learn about a variety of animals in engaging and age-appropriate ways.
On Don't Step on a Bee Day, children will discover why bees are often called nature's little helpers. They will learn how bees collect pollen, help flowers grow and contribute to the food we eat every day.
World Snake Day offers an opportunity to explore one of nature's most misunderstood creatures. Through stories, discussions and creative activities, children can learn that snakes are an important part of many ecosystems and come in a wonderful variety of colours, patterns and sizes.
Finally, International Tiger Day introduces children to one of the world's most iconic animals. By learning about tigers and their habitats, children begin to understand that some animals need our help and protection to survive.
Bringing Wildlife into Story Time
Stories are a wonderful way to deepen children's understanding of the natural world. Our July Book of the Month, The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr, provides the perfect link to our wildlife theme.
This much-loved classic sparks imagination and discussion while introducing children to one of the most fascinating animals on the planet. Through storytelling, role play and creative activities inspired by the book, children can explore themes of curiosity, adventure and friendship while developing their language and literacy skills.
